As of 2005 approximately 6.2 Million children are under guardianship care. With no formal community to draw from or give to.

In Alabama...

  • There are 92,648 children living in grandparent-headed households (8.2% of all the children in the state). There are another 20,475 children living in household headed by other relatives (1.8% of all the children in the state). Of the children living in households headed by grandparents or other relatives in Alabama, 51,486 are living there without either parent present.

  • 56,369 grandparents report they are responsible for their grandchildren living with them [4,764 grandparents in Birmingham and 2,825 in Mobile]: 50% of these grandparents are African American; 1% are Hispanic/Latino; and 48% are White. 40% of these grandparents live in households without the children’s parents present. 71.5% are under the age of 60; 25.9% live in poverty.

In Alaska...

(As of October 2007)

  • 8,188 children live in grandparent-headed households (4.3% of all the children in the state). There are another 2,620 children living in households headed by other relatives (1.4% of all the children in the state). Of the children living in households headed by grandparents or other relatives in Alaska, 5,110 are living there without either parent present.

  • 5,419 grandparents report they are responsible for their grandchildren living with them (1,719 in Anchorage): 4% of these grandparents are African American; 2% are Hispanic/Latino; 43% are American Indian or Alaskan Native; 4% are Asian; 2% are Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander and 41% are White. 34% of these grandparents live in households without the children’s parents present. 67.4% are under the age of 60; 11.5% live in poverty.

In Arizona...

  • 96,062 children live in grandparent-headed households (7.0% of all children in the state). There are another 36,720 children living in households headed by other relatives (2.7% of all children in the state). Of the children living in households headed by grandparents or other relatives in Arizona, 54,833 have neither parent present.

  • 52,210 grandparents report they are responsible for their grandchildren living with them [13,262 in Phoenix and 4,995 in Tucson]: 5% of these grandparents are African American; 39% are Hispanic/Latino; 14% are American Indian and Alaskan Native; 1% are Asian; and 40% are White. 27% of these grandparents live in households without the children’s parents present. 74% are under the age of 60; 19% live in poverty.

There are another 11,881children living in households headed by other relatives (1.7% of all children in the state).   • There are 625,934 children living in grandparent-headed households (6.8% of all the children in the state). There are another 327,623 children living in households headed by other relatives (3.5% of all the children in the state). Of the children living in households headed by grandparents or other relatives in California, 389,631 are living there without either parent present.

  • 294,969 grandparents report they are responsible for their grandchildren living with them [30,511 in Los Angeles and 8,840 in San Diego]: 12% of these grandparents are African American; 42% are Hispanic/Latino, 9% are Asian, 1% are American Indian and Alaskan Native and 33% are White. 25% of these grandparents live in households without the children’s parents present. 67% are under the age of 60; 16% live in poverty.

There are another 19,230 children living in households headed by other relatives (1.7 % of all children in the state). There are another 12,406 children living in households headed by other relatives (1.5 % of all children in the state).   • 16,723 children live in grandparent-headed households (14.5% of all children in the District). There are another 5,374 children living in households headed by other relatives (4.7 % of all children in the District). There are another 53,785 children living in households headed by other relatives (2.5% of all children in the state). Of the children living in households headed by grandparents or other relatives in Georgia, 98,773 are living there without either parent present.

  • 92,265 grandparents report they are responsible for their grandchildren living with them [5,947 grandparents in Atlanta and 2,572 in Columbus]: 52% of these grandparents are African American; 3% are Hispanic/Latino; 1% are Asian; and 24% are White. 36% of these grandparents live in households without the children’s parents present. 74% are under the age of 60; 20% live in poverty.

  • 38,051 children live in grandparent-headed households (12.9% of all the children in the state). There are another 4,128 children living in households headed by other relatives (3.4% of all the children in the state). Of the children living in households headed by grandparents or other relatives in Hawaii, 13,814 are living there without either parent present.

  • 14,029 grandparents report they are responsible for their grandchildren living with them (3,260 in Honolulu): 17% of these grandparents are Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander; 8% are Hispanic/Latino; 40% are Asian; and 14% are White. 22% of these grandparents live in households without the children’s parents present. 60% are under the age of 60; 11% live in poverty.

  • In 2004, there were 4,471 children in the U.S.V.I. between the ages of 0 and 18 living in a family headed by a grandparent. There were 1,706 children in the U.S.V.I. between the ages of 0 and 18 living in a family headed by a relative other than a grandparent. In total, 19.5% or approximately 1/5 of the children in the U.S.V.I are living in households headed by grandparents and other relatives.

  • In 2004, of the 19.5% of children living with grandparents and other relatives, St. Croix had a total of 3,269; St. Thomas had a total of 2,733, and St. John had a total of 176 children living with grandparents and other relatives.

  • In the U.S.V.I, there are 4,735 grandparents living in households with their grandchildren. 2,873 (59%) of these grandparents report they are responsible for their grandchildren living with them.
